This is the core process of IObit Malware Fighter. Capabilities include cleaning up malware, spyware, adware, bots, trojans, etc. It detects, cleans and blocks unwanted applications on the PC. IObit Malware Fighter (introduced in 2004) is an anti-malware and anti-virus program for the Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows XP and later). It is designed to remove and protect against malware, including, but not limited to: Trojans, rootkits, and ransomware.

  • Additionally, Rootkit scan is only available in IObit Malware Fighter Pro. You can tick Automatically remove at the left bottom to remove the threats found automatically after scan.
  • There are 3 versions of scan.dll in the wild, the latest version being 1.0.0.1545. The average file size is about 1.19 MB. The file is a digitally signed and issued to IObit Information Technology by VeriSign. Numerous variations of scan.dll have been installed with both IObit Malware Fighter and IObit Malware Fighter 3.

Overview[edit]

IObit Malware Fighter has a freeware version, which can run alongside the user's existing anti-virus solution. In the paid edition, the product comes with anti-virus protection. As of version 6, released in 2018, the product includes the Bitdefender engine in its commercial version, along with their own anti-malware engine.[3] New features of the latest release includes an improved user interface called 'Safe Box' created to protect specific folders from unauthorized access, and 'MBR Guard' which protects the user's system from malicious attacks such as Petya and cryptocurrency mining scripts.[4]

  • In 2010, the first beta for IObit Malware Fighter 1.0 was released to the public.[5]
  • In 2013, IObit Malware Fighter 2 was released. In this version, IObit debuted their 'cloud security' component, in which the user can upload a file to the cloud to determine whether it is malicious or not.[6] In 2015, version 3 was released, and then, in 2016, version 4, which added the Bitdefender anti-virus engine in its commercial edition.[7][8]
  • In 2017, version 5 was released. Among new features was an anti-ransomware component.[9] Version 6 was released in May 2018.[2]
  • In 2018, version 6 was released. It added new features, including Safe Box, and MBR Guard

Critical reception[edit]

  • In November 2011, the free and paid versions of IObit Malware Fighter were reviewed by Bright Hub, in which the reviewer was unable to recommend the product, citing poor malware protection.[10]
  • In May 2013, IObit Malware Fighter received a 'dismal' score, half a star out of five, for its paid version by PC Magazine.[11]
  • In December 2013, the paid version of IObit Malware Fighter received a 1 out of 5 star rating from Softpedia.[12]
  • In March 2015, the commercial version of IObit Malware Fighter 3 received a negative review from PC Magazine, with the reviewer calling the product 'useless'.[13]
  • IObit Malware Fighter received a 4 out of 5 star editors rating on CNET's Download.com.[14]
  • In May 2017, PC Magazine gave the paid version of IObit Malware Fighter a 2 out of 5 star rating.[15]
  • In July 2017, TechRadar gave the IObit Malware Fighter paid version a two and a half star rating, in which the reviewer complained about the product's overall protection against malware.[16]
  • In May 2018, IObit Malware Fighter 6 received a negative review from ReviewedByPro.com website with the reviewer stating that the software “is not capable on protecting the entire family, or heavy internet users as the defenses are not very reliable and security features do not work well”.[3]

Download and Installation

1) Click here to download the latest IObit Malware Fighter.

2) Double-click the downloaded IObit-Malware-Fighter-Setup.exe to start the installation.

Uninstall

Windows 10:

Open Start > Click Settings > Click Apps on the Settings menu > Select Programs & features or Apps & features from the left panel > Find IObit Malware Fighter and click Uninstall > Follow the on-screen prompts

Windows 8.1 & 8:

Open Start > Click Control Panel > Select Programs & features > Find IObit Malware Fighter and click Uninstall > Click the Yes button when prompted to uninstall the program > Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the product from your computer

Updates

Pro users can always enjoy the latest version and database automatically with Automatically update the program and database (recommend) option ticked by default in Settings.

Free users can manually update IObit Malware Fighter and its database with either of the options below:

1) Click at the top right of the main screen and select Check for Updates to update your program and/or database to the latest when updates are available.

2) Click in the main screen can also help you update the outdated database when your database is outdated.

3) Right click the icon in the system tray, and select Check for Updates.

Activation

Note: A valid license code is required to activate the Pro version. If you forgot your license code, retrieve it here. You can also click here to purchase a new one.

Click the Enter Code link at the bottom right corner of IObit Malware Fighter main screen, enter your license code, and click the Register Now button to activate the Pro version. Visit here for step-by-step activation instructions.

Manage License - After upgrading to the Pro version, you can click the Manage License link at the bottom right of the screen to check the detailed license information, Refresh your license, or Export License.

Main Screen

This is the first screen you may see after IObit Malware Fighter is installed and launched.

Sidebar Menu

Hovering your mouse on any of the 6 icons on the most left side will show you the corresponding module name including Home, Scan, Data Protect, Browser Protect, Securtiy Guard, and Action Center. You can go to different modules by clicking different sidebar icons. Please refer to the picture below:

PC Status

When you open IObit Malware Fighter, you will see one of the following four kinds of PC status according to the current status of your PC.

1. YOUR PC IS PROTECTED - It indicates your computer is fully protected by IObit Malware Fighter.

2. YOUR PC IS NOT FULLY PROTECTED - It indicates there are some functions under Browser Protect or Security Guard not enabled.

Please just click the Protect Now button. Then the program will turn on all functions under Browser Protect and Security Guard to fully protect your PC.

3. YOUR PC MAY BE IN DANGER - It indicates that your IObit Malware Fighter is not fully functional. It happens when two or three of the following situations exist:

1) The database is outdated.

2) Functions under Browser Protect or Security Guard are not fully turned on.

3) You haven't scanned with IObit Malware Fighter for 3+ days

4. YOUR PC HAS NOT BEEN SCANNED FOR XX DAYS - It indicates the database is up to date and Browser Protect and Security Guard work well, but you haven't scanned with IObit Malware Fighter for 3+ days. Then you will get the notification to remind you to scan.

Scan and Protect Engines

You can also check the 3 engines' status and details in the main screen by hovering the mouse on the icon of the engine.

IObit Anti-malware Engine is the core feature of IObit Malware Fighter and is enabled by default. For your PC security, it cannot be disabled.

Anti-ransomware Engine is off by default. You can enable it manually after you activate IObit Malware Fighter Pro to protect your PC from ransomware attacks.

Bitdefender Engine is off by default. You can enable it manually after you activate IObit Malware Fighter Pro.

Clicking the arrow button at the right bottom can help you fold the three engines as below:

Notification Center

Click at the top right corner to check all missed notifications. And then take action accordingly per you needs.

Scan

The 3 scan methods ( Smart Scan, Full Scan, Custom Scan ) are prominently displayed as below. Besides, it also has the 4th scan method Right-click Scan which will be introduced at the end.

Smart Scan - Quickly scan the most critical sections of your computer.

Full Scan - Comprehensively scan all hard drives for the deepest infections, and remove or quarantine them. Generally, Full Scan takes much longer time than Smart Scan, Custom Scan, and Right-click Scan.

Custom Scan - Only scan the items you selected. Besides listing all disks on your computer, it also displays System Critical Areas and Suspicious Processes as these areas have the highest possibility of being infected. To scan these locations, just tick the checkboxs before them and click Scan. You can also navigate to a specific folder on any disk to perform a custom scan instead of selecting the whole disk to save time. Or just drag and drop a file/folder to scan it directly.

Right-click Scan - Just right-click on the item you want to scan and then select Scan with IObit Malware Fighter in the context menu.

Scan History - Clicking Scan History at the bottom right of the Scan window will dispaly the summary scan history, and click View Details to get details about the precise scan.

Auto Scan - Clicking the Auto Scan button at the bottom right of the Scan window will go to the settings of Auto Scan so that you can configure the most appropriate scan method for your PC.

Scan Process

Once you start a scan (either Smart Scan or Full Scan), you will see the scan process that looks like below. But for Custom Scan and Right-click Scan, you can see only two processes: Initialize the Database and Files, unless you ticked System Critical Areas and Suspicious Processes under Custom Scan. Additionally, Rootkit scan is only available in IObit Malware Fighter Pro.

Iobit Malware Fighter Should I Remove It

You can tick Automatically remove at the left bottom to remove the threats found automatically after scan. Clicking the dropdown arrow icon , will offer 5 options as the picture shows: Automatically remove, Auto remove & Shut down PC, Auto remove & Restart PC, Auto remove & Hibernate PC, and Auto remove & Sleep PC.

Scan Results

1) If no threat is detected, it will show 'No Threats Found!' and you may get action recommendation according to your PC status such as enable Bitdefender Engine, run a Full Scan,etc.

2) If threats are detected, it will display the detailed information about the detected threats as below.

By clicking the dropdown button of each threat, you will see the following four operation options.

Remove - Click to remove the corresponding threat.

Ingore - Click to ignore the corresponding threat just for this time.

Add to White List - Add this threat to White List and it won't be scanned anymore unless it is removed from White List.

Open file location - Click to open the file location of the detected item.

View Report - Click to see the details about the scan.

Report False Positive - In case of a false positive, please click the Report False Positive link at the bottom left corner to open the feedback window and submit false positive to IObit. IObit Support Team will analyze the false positive and perform actions accordingly.

NOTE: Please refer to the Report False Positive section of this manual to get detailed information about how to report a false positive.

Click the Remove button at the right corner to remove all selected threats found on your PC or click Cancel to not deal with the threats found. However, it is highly recommended that you remove all the threats found to ensure your PC security.

Data Protect

There are two features under Data Protect: Anti-ransomware Engine and Safe box. Both of them aim to protect your privacy and sensitive data from ransomware attacks and unauthorized accesses, but they protect in different ways to meet different requirements.

Anti-ransomware Engine protects the sensitive data and files as per the data/file types you ticked in its Settings, while Safe box protects the specified folders/files you added there.

You can configure the Settings of Anti-ransomware Engine as per your own needs. Please refer to the picture below.

When you open Safe Box after the installation for the first time, you will be asked to set the password protection in a prompt window. If you want to get password protection, you should enter the requested information refer to the picuture below.

Note: The Enable password protection option is only available for Pro users.

If you choose Disable password protection, you can go to the basic protection window as follows:

Browser Protect

Click Browser Protect through sidebar to open the window below. These features can help protect your browsers in real time and ensure you a safe and smooth surfing environment. Browser Protect provides 6 features as below to protect your browsers against threats.

Homepage Advisor - It monitors any change to your browser homepage and search engine, and notifies you to undo the change to prevent malicious modification. Currently, it supports Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. You can click Details text link to check the protection status and history, or adjust the settings to serve you better as the picture below:

Anti-Tracking - It protects you from being tracked by monitoring and cleaning harmful tracking data automatically once your browser is closed. Currently, it supports Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

Download Protection - It scans the downloaded files to keep your PC away from malicious files.

DNS Protect - It protects your system DNS settings from being modified by malware. You can click the Details link to select the DNS settings you want to protect.

Plugin / Toolbar Cleaner - It protects your browsers against the malicious plugins / toolbars. Currently, it supports Internet Explorer and Firefox. Click Manage to uninstall unwanted plugins / toolbars by IObit Uninstaller. If you haven't installed IObit Uninstaller, you will see the Install button. Click Install will lead you to download IObit Uninstaller first.

Surfing Protection & Ads Removal - It protects you against various online threats to secure your surfing experience, and keeps you undisturbed from annoying ads on webpages. Besides, its Email Protection can protect your web emails against spam, phishing scam, and other email-borne threats. Currently, Surfing Protection supports Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and Firefox; Ads Removal supports Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox; Email Protection supports Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo Mail. Click Security Guard on the sidebar to open Security Guard window. IObit Malware Fighter supplies 8 guards to fully protect your system against various threats.

By hovering your mouse over each guard, you will see the detailed explanation for each guard as follows:

Network Guard - Blocks web pages containing threats.

MBR Guard - Protects against the malicious attacks targeting MBR like GoldenEye/Petya attacks. This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

File Guard - Scans for threats when running unknown files.This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

Camera Guard - Protects your Camera from unauthorized access by unknown programs.This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

Startup Guard - Protects against suspicious malware at Windows Startup.

USB Disk Guard - Prevents USB virus from harming your PC.This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

Process Guard - Detects malicious process running in RAM.

Malicious Action - Detects threats by analyzing malicious actions. This feature is only available for IObit Malware Fighter Pro users.

Here you can also see details of your protect history by clicking Protect History.

Protect report - It records the total number of the analyzed files and detected threats.

Recently detected items - It shows the details of detected threats by Security Guard.

Action Center

To get better security protection and performance boost, Action Center recommends you other well-known IObit software. You can run the programs directly in Action Center once you installed them. Or click Install Now to install the program you might be interested in.

Note: Click Hide at the middle right of the window if you do not want the recommended programs, and click Show in the middle of the window to display them again.

Settings

Click at the top right of the main screen and click Settings to configure IObit Malware Fighter according to your own needs and habits at first.

Note: Do not forget to click Apply and OK buttons to save your changes.

You can customize skin and front size as per your needs. Please refer to the picture below:

System Tray Icon

After IObit Malware Fighter is launched, you can quickly view the status of your PC or the protection status of IObit Malware Fighter from the prompt of the system tray icon. Just follow the notification to do the operation for protecting your PC. Please refer to the following main situations:

Right click the icon of IObit Malware Fighter in the system tray and you can see the functions in the context menu as the picture below:

Open IObit Malware Fighter - Open the main window of IObit Malware Fighter.

Smart Scan - Run a smart scan of your PC.

Data Protect - Open Data Protect window directly.

Browser Protect - Open Browser Protect window directly.

Turn off Real-time Protection - You can choose to turn off real-time protection Until Restart IMF or Permanently.

It is strongly recommended that you keep real-time protection running in the background to protect your PC from various malware attacks.

Check for Updates - Check whether you have the latest program and database.

Exit - Close IObit Malware Fighter completely.

Cloud Security

Click at the top right to open Cloud Security window and see the details about IObit Cloud Community Statistics. You can also upload suspicious files to IObit Cloud for analyzing.

Analyze a file - By clicking this button, you can upload the suspicious file to IObit Cloud for analyzing. And it will show you the scan report of the suspicious file.

Submit Samples - By clicking this link, you will open the feedback window. There you can submit the files you suspect and get help from our support team.

Report False Positive

A false positive occurs when an anti-malware program detects a file as malicious, but in fact, it is legitimate. False Positives are unavoidable for any security software including IObit Malware Fighter and we are always trying our best to prevent these false positives from happening. In the event of a false positive, please follow the steps below before you report a false positive:

1. Make sure that you have updated IObit Malware Fighter to the latest database version.

2. Click here to upload the suspicious file to VirusTotal for analyzing to verify whether it's reported as malicious file by other security software.

3. There are two ways to report a false positive:

1) Click Report False Positive in the scan results screen to open the feedback window to contact us. Please click attachment and select the falsely reported files. Then click Send button to report us the false positive. If possible, please also provide us with the analysis report link from Virus Total.
